Sega’s Yakuza series will make its debut on Nintendo Switch with Yakuza Kiwami on Oct. 24, Nintendo announced during Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct showcase. The game itself is a high-definition remake of the first Yakuza game, first published for PlayStation 2 in 2006.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Amazon Prime Video’s live-action adaptation, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, premieres Oct. 25.
Yakuza Kiwami appears to be a straightforward port to Switch; the trailer Nintendo showed on Tuesday presented all the familiar elements of Yakuza, from intense, combo-inflected melee combat to the numerous distractions and minigames available as antihero Kazuma Kiryu swaggers through Tokyo’s Kamurocho entertainment district.
Despite a series history spanning more than 20 titles, just two others have appeared on any kind of Nintendo platform and only in Japan: the original Yakuza, and Yakuza 2.
The newest game in the series, since retitled to match its branding in Japan, is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which launched Jan. 26 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
