Tailscale Simplifies Secure Access With Border0 Acquisition

DATE POSTED:March 17, 2026

Secure connectivity firm Tailscale has acquired privileged access management (PAM) firm Border0, Tailscale said in a Tuesday (March 17) blog post.

This acquisition adds Border0’s solutions for managing access to sensitive infrastructure such as production systems and Kubernetes to Tailscale’s solutions for secure connectivity, according to the post.

“Once you move from ‘Can this machine reach that machine?’ to ‘Who should be allowed into this database, cluster or admin interface, for how long, and with what visibility into what happened after they got there?’, the problem changes shape a bit,” Tailscale CEO Avery Pennarun said in the post. “That’s where Border0 fits.”

Border0’s access system is fully integrated with Tailscale, so it can work with users’ existing tailnet, identities and policies, per the post.

“Over time, we’ll pull these capabilities closer into the Tailscale experience and build out a more native Tailscale PAM offering on top of the same foundation,” Pennarun said.

The Border0 team has joined Tailscale, with former Border0 CEO Andree Toonk becoming Tailscale’s director of engineering, according to the post.

In his own blog post about the acquisition, Toonk said that both teams believe “infrastructure access should be secure by default, simple to deploy and powerful enough to give teams real control and visibility without adding operational friction.”

With Tailscale’s connectivity platform making secure networking simple and reliable, and Border0’s application layer on top of that controlling who gets access, when they get it and what happens during those sessions, “you get a very natural platform for secure infrastructure access,” Toonk said.

Tailscale announced in April 2025 that it raised $160 million in a Series C funding round to grow its engineering and product teams, unlock more markets faster, and invest further in its free support for free customers offering and its backward compatibility forever platform.

“Business is booming, and taking investment now lets us stay focused on making the network just work, whether you’re a startup, a Fortune 500 or a person running a Minecraft server,” Pennarun said in a post announcing the round.

Tailscale’s Series C round was led by Accel. Accel Partner Amit Kumar said in an April 2025 blog post that Tailscale’s solution is finding many use cases.

“One area where we’ve seen a surge in demand is from AI startups, which rely on Tailscale to manage the complex networking challenges that come with running workloads across multiple cloud providers,” Kumar said.
