Qualcomm CEO confirms Snapdragon desktops are planned

One of the many questions surrounding Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors has always been: Is it just a mobile processor? Qualcomm has hinted before that it isn’t, but the company’s chief executive just gave the strongest indication that a desktop chip truly is in the cards.

At the launch of the 8-core Snapdragon X Plus in advance of the IFA show in Berlin, Qualcomm chief executive Cristiano Amon was asked about the possibility of a desktop Snapdragon chip. He replied:

“The first thing that we did, we launched [Snapdragon] X Elite. Then we launched the X Plus, plus the 10-core. Today, we’re launching the 8-core Plus to try to get at different price points. You’re going to see us with a lot of designs on desktops, mini desktops, and eventually, you won’t be surprised of us still thinking about high-performance desktop. We are on this journey. As I said, we’re here to stay.”

Amon also hinted at closer collaboration with Chromebooks, which Google executive John Solomon indicated back in June.

Amon also told his audience that he would be providing more detail at an investor conference in November, where he would be talking about the future of the Snapdragon platform. “Stay tuned for November,” he said.
