OpenAI’s Japan president reveals details surrounding ‘GPT-Next’

The Japanese president of OpenAI has teased the upcoming AI model named GPT-Next and shared his expectation that it will be far more powerful than the current version.

Tadao Nagasaki shared the insights at the business-focused KDDI Summit 2024 event which was held in Tokyo this week, reports Japanese language tech site ITMedia. It was on Tuesday (Sep 3) when Nagasaki said: “The AI model called GPT-Next, which will eventually come out, will evolve nearly 100 times based on past achievements.

“Unlike conventional software, AI technology grows exponentially…” (translated using Google Translate)

The implied major upgrade will come from better architecture and learning efficiency, rather than just raw computing power. It will also use a smaller version of ‘Strawberry’ which is the advanced AI system that OpenAI is rumored to be developing.

This is the first time information about GPT-Next has been shared and while the date hasn’t been mentioned, a slide picture behind the OpenAI Japanese president mentions GPT-Next 2024.

OpenAI has already started training GPT-5 in preparation for the AI model’s expected release in late 2024 or early 2025.

He was also said to have confirmed that a more advanced model could be coming out in 2025. This was visible through a slide showing the trajectory of OpenAI’s releases.

If the 100 times capabilities are accurate on the launch of the next model, the future of OpenAI could be even more exciting than expected as they continue to be the leaders in this area.

Nagasaki touched on the milestone the company has reached, with ChatGPT now enjoying 200 million weekly users.

The company has expanded out of the consumer sector and targeted businesses, with ChatGPT Enterprise launched in August 2023. Since its launch, OpenAI boasts that teams have adopted the technology in over 80% of Fortune 500 companies. Early adopters included industry leaders like Canva, PwC, and Zapier.

“The number of adoptions by companies is increasing at a tremendous rate,” said Nagasaki at the conference.
