Earlier this year, Pingdom published an analysis of the top 100 blogs on the Royal Pingdom blog which identified the blogging platforms used by each blog on the list. According to the analysis, WordPress dominates the blogging world with 52% of the top 100 blogs using the WordPress-hosted (WordPress.com or WordPress VIP SaaS) or WordPress self-hosted platform. That is an increase from 48% in 2012 and 32% in 2009. Clearly, WordPress is dominating the blogosphere. The next most popular blogging platform used by the top 100 blogs is a custom platform (12%) followed by Drupal (7%).
Pingdom conducted another interesting analysis in March of this year. In its report of blog readership demographics of the top 100 blogs, Pingdom found that the average blog reader is 41 years old (median age is 38), but age fluctuates significantly between blogs. Looking at gender, the average top blog’s audience is 45% female and 55% male. Overall, 74% of the top blogs are dominated by male readers while just 15% are dominated by women readers.
The world of blogging has changed and grown so much over the past five years, and these statistics give a small peak into the evolution of blogging.
