How Much Does Shopify Take Per Sale in 2024?

DATE POSTED:May 27, 2024

On top of your monthly subscription fees for Shopify’s software, you’ll be charged credit card processing fees on each transaction.

Plus, there may be extra transaction fees to pay if you’re not using Shopify Payments (the integrated Shopify payment processor).

How much does Shopify take per sale? That might sound like an odd question. As a SaaS (Software as a service) platform, Shopify doesn’t take a cut of your profits in the same was as certain marketplaces like Ebay or Depop. However it does charge fees.

So, how much will you pay? It all depends on your chosen Shopify plan, and your payment gateway.

Understanding Shopify Fees

If you’re wondering how much Shopify takes from you for each sale, you’ll first need to understand Shopify’s fees.

You’re probably already familiar with Shopify’s monthly subscription fees, ranging from $29 to $299 (paid annually). If you’re not, I’ve outlined everything you need to know here.

However, these fees only allow you to access Shopify’s platform and various features. Whenever you make a sale with Shopify, you’ll also need to pay payment processing fees. These fees vary depending on two things: the type of transaction (such as online or in store), and your Shopify plan.

All payment processing solutions charge fees on credit card transactions, as this pays for the cost of a payment gateway connecting to the banks and credit card companies that facilitate transactions.

Shopify’s payment processing fees are actually pretty competitive, and they have the added benefit of dropping lower as you upgrade your Shopify subscription.

On top of that, there are other fees to consider, such as:

Transaction fees (Charged when you don’t use Shopify Payments): 0.15% to 2% Domain registration fees Fees for apps and integrations Fees for specialist Shopify Services Shipping fees Point of sale software fees (for Shopify POS Pro) Conversion fees for international sales How Much Does Shopify Take Per Sale?

So, how much does Shopify take per sale? If we’re focusing just on the payment processing fees and transaction fees charged by the platform, this varies depending on the plan you choose.

The more expensive your plan, the less you’ll pay for both card processing, and transaction rates.

Shopify’s Payment Processing Fees

Shopify’s Payment processing fees get lower the more you spend on your subscription plan. There are even special processing rates available for companies using Shopify Plus.

Shopify Basic ($29-$39 per month): 2.9% plus 30 cents for online transactions, or 2.7% plus 0 cents for in-store transactions, per sale. Shopify ($79-$105 per month): 2.6% plus 30 cents for online transactions, or 2.5% plus 0 cents for in-store transactions, per sale. Shopify Advanced ($229-$399 per month): 2.4% plus 30 cents for online transactions, or 2.4 plus 0 cents for in-store transactions, per sale. Shopify Plus (Starting at $2,300): 2.15% plus 30 cents for online transactions, or variable fees for in-store transactions, per sale. Shopify’s Transaction Fees

The transaction fees charged by Shopify are added on top of the payment processing fees charged by your third-party payment gateway if you choose to use something other than Shopify payments. These fees also vary depending on your plan:

Shopify Basic: 2% Shopify: 1% Shopify Advanced: 0.5% Shopify Plus: 0.15%

You can eliminate these fees entirely by using Shopify Payments as your payment processor, which is something I recommend to most ecommerce vendors.
