Google rolls out Android 15 to Pixel devices with theft protection

Google has begun rolling out Android 15 to its Pixel devices, with a wave of new theft protection features, a private space for sensitive apps, as well as improvements for foldables and tablets. The operating system initially debuted last month via the Android Open Source Project, but it wasn’t yet accessible on Pixel phones, tablets, or other major Android devices.

Among the major new features, a new Theft Detection Lock will use AI to help keep users’ data safe. Google explains in a blog post that if your phone senses it has been snatched and the perpetrator is trying to run, bike or drive away, it will automatically lock your device.

Remote Lock is another tool that will help quickly lock your device from any device using your phone number and a simple security check. These features are now available for most Android 10+ devices.

Android devices have long supported the ability to secure specific apps with a fingerprint or passcode. With Android 15, Google is integrating this functionality directly into the Pixel’s operating system through a feature called Private Space.

This new feature allows users to secure sensitive apps, such as those for banking or health, making sure that their content and notifications remain completely concealed. Private Space can even be made invisible on your device for better privacy. It mainly uses fingerprint authentication, though users have the option to establish a custom lock for added security.

In terms of foldables and tablets, users can now easily pin and unpin their taskbar on the screen. This means you’ll be able to your layout and keep your favorite apps, like Google Photos or Gmail, in reach for quicker access and improved productivity.

ReadWrite reported that the Android 15 beta 2 was released earlier this year, and developers already had the chance to test out features such as augmented reality, better connectivity, and in-app camera controls.
