The wildly popular Eurovision Song Contest – estimated in 2024 to have been watched by some 163 million people has had its fair share of controversial acts over the years, but Malta’s entrant for 2025 Miriana Conte has gained a heap of publicity over a row over the title and lyrics to her song, ‘Kant’.
While Eurovision bosses may have balked at the prospect of Mariana’s catchy chorus repeatedly saying “serving kant” – a word she insists in Maltese for singing, it seems the proximity of the word to a far-less popular c-word profanity was a step too far, with the BBC rumored to be among those raising its suitability for prime-time worldwide broadcast, no doubt in a strongly worded email.
Conte has now changed the lyric, against her will, to just Serving with the word kant replaced by “ahhh”. Genius.
The controversy seems to have done no harm however with Malta now being propelled into the top 10 favorites for the Contest for the first time, and depending on how much more publicity it picks up ahead of the big night, could find itself closing on show favorite Sweden.
You can watch a snippet of the performance for yourself (although not if you may be easily offended) and make your own mind up, but it is difficult to see how it could have been broadcast across the globe with no real context to the word’s meaning.
We will keep a close eye on the odds as we run up to the Eurovision 2025 on Saturday, 17th May, which will be held in Basel. Switzerland.
