EcoFlow’s Power Hat: The hat that can charge your phone with a little help from the sun

A woman wearing the Power Hat.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you – the Power Hat from EcoFlow can charge your phone by just sitting in the sun.

Wearable tech has come a long way. This year has seen health monitoring earrings and the possibility to help people with vocal cord issues speak again. The Power Hat is definitely more on the gimmicky side of wearables but people are quite hyped about it.

EcoFlow specialises in solar tech and portable power, so this new hat is pretty on brand for them.

Everything you need to know about the Power Hat

Have you ever felt the desire to wear eight solar panels on your head? Me neither, but that’s the experience EcoFlow is offering. (Someone must want it though, because it’s currently sold out.) The big floppy hat can catch rays from all angles with 360 degree coverage, keeping you safe from the sun and collecting power simultaneously.

Equipped with USB-A and USB-C ports, it can charge two devices at the same time. EcoFlow claims it can fully charge a 4000mAh phone in 3 to 4 hours – not lightning fast, but not bad if you’re in the great outdoors with no electricity.

To give credit where it’s due, the hat weighs only 13 oz (370 g) and can be folded. Thanks to the panels being made of passivated emitter and perc monocrystalline silicon, it likely won’t feel like there are multiple solar panels weighing your head down. It’s water and dust proof too, ideal for activities like fishing and hiking.

It was on sale for $79, down from $129 and is available in two adjustable sizes. Black is the only colour option, however.

Pre-orders for the Power Hat are currently sold out and retail availability is not yet confirmed. Keep an eye on EcoFlow’s website for more information if you want to get your hands on one.
