Covera’s Protect Her AI sees what doctors often don’t

DATE POSTED:April 1, 2025
Covera’s Protect Her AI sees what doctors often don’t

Covera Health launched Protect Her on April 1, 2025, an AI platform designed to detect breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis in women aged 40 and up using routine imaging scans.

This system analyzes mammograms, chest CTs, and chest x-rays to pinpoint early disease indicators, helping women receive timely care before symptoms manifest.

The platform addresses a critical gap in women’s healthcare, where early signs of conditions like cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and osteoporosis often go unnoticed during routine imaging.

For instance:

  • Breast cancer: 1 in 5 breast cancers are missed on screening mammograms.
  • Heart disease: Up to 1 in 6 women show early signs of heart disease on mammograms, but these indicators are rarely reported.
  • Osteoporosis: Approximately 1 in 2 women with osteoporosis will experience a fracture, and 20% of those with hip fractures won’t survive beyond the first year.

Ron Vianu, CEO of Covera Health, stated that Protect Her uses AI to empower providers with insights that detect life-threatening conditions early, which is a “game-changer for women’s health.”

Protect Her works by analyzing existing imaging studies to identify overlooked conditions:

  • Breast cancer: AI can detect subtle patterns indicating early malignancies, increasing detection rates.
  • Cardiovascular disease: The platform flags breast arterial calcifications (BAC), a marker of heart disease visible on mammograms, and Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) on chest CT scans.
  • Osteoporosis: AI scans for vertebral spine fractures, often missed in early stages.

Employers and health plans can use Protect Her to proactively manage healthcare costs and enhance employee well-being by catching diseases early, which offers the following benefits:

  • Improve diagnostic accuracy: Covera’s AI detects and verifies clinical findings on imaging reports.
  • Reduce high-cost claims: Early detection reduces costs associated with late-stage conditions.
  • Improve workforce productivity: Early intervention leads to better treatment outcomes and less missed work.
  • Support a healthier employee population: This leads to lower long-term healthcare costs and higher workplace satisfaction.

Dr. Phoebe E. Freer, Professor of Radiology and Breast Cancer Screening Leader with the American College of Radiology, noted that AI transforms medicine by detecting early signs of disease, providing critical insights for patients and physicians to act proactively.

Covera Health aims to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs by combining AI with clinical expertise to develop radiology programs and a Centers of Excellence network.
