Apple TV+ still trails in US streaming wars

Apple TV+ saw a slight uptick in subscriptions thanks to the January premiere of Severance season two, but new data reveals it’s still playing catch-up in the streaming wars. JustWatch data, spotted by 9to5Mac, details the streaming platform market share in the US during Q1 2025.

Apple TV+ climbed from 7% in Q4 2024 to 8% in Q1 2025, covering January through March. While Apple touted increased subscriptions, the bump wasn’t enough to shake up the leaderboard significantly.

The Q1 2025 figures largely mirror the previous quarter. Amazon Prime Video and Netflix continue to dominate, with Max and Disney+ following at a distance. Peacock and Starz both reached 2% market share.

Here’s the full market share breakdown according to JustWatch’s report:

  • Amazon Prime Video: 21%
  • Netflix: 20%

  • Disney+: 12%
  • Hulu: 10%
  • Apple TV+: 8%
  • Paramount +: 7%
  • Peacock: 2%
  • Starz: 2%
  • Others: 5%

Launched in 2019, Apple TV+ boasts over 300 titles, focusing on original content. Despite critical acclaim and awards, reports estimate Apple loses $1 billion annually on the platform, which has roughly 45 million subscribers globally.
