Apple to challenge Samsung with pocketable clamshell-style foldable

Apple is exploring a square, clamshell-style foldable phone as a potential second foldable iPhone following its first model, rumored for release later this year, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Gurman states that this device remains far from guaranteed to reach the market and exists only under consideration at present. The exploration signals Apple’s preparation of follow-up options to address anticipated demand from the debut foldable iPhone. Development focuses on a compact form factor distinct from larger designs previously examined.

The first foldable iPhone lacks a confirmed release date but carries expectations of strong performance, prompting Apple to advance plans for subsequent devices. This positioning aims to challenge established competitors, including Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Motorola’s revamped Razr foldable, both clamshell-style products already available.

Reports of clamshell prototypes predate Gurman’s latest update. The Information disclosed that Apple had produced prototypes in this form factor, confirming early experimentation with the design. Such efforts indicate sustained interest in smaller, pocketable foldables over time.

Gurman detailed additional explorations in his Power On newsletter, where Apple considers a larger foldable that opens like a book. This contrasts with the square clamshell by prioritizing expanded screen real estate when unfolded.

Earlier, Gurman reported Apple’s evaluation of a foldable roughly the size of an iPad. Development encountered significant challenges with this larger format, leading to potential postponement of any launch until 2029.
