Amazon expands Health AI assistant to website and app.
The move broadens access to a personalized health tool that can explain medical records, manage prescriptions and book appointments. Amazon said the expansion increases the assistant’s reach beyond One Medical users and makes it available to all Amazon customers.
Health AI previously was available only on the One Medical app after Amazon acquired the company for $3.9 billion in 2023. The assistant can answer health questions, interpret lab results, connect users with healthcare professionals and handle prescription renewals with user permission. Access is not limited to Prime subscribers or One Medical members.
Amazon trains Health AI on abstracted patterns without directly identifying information to improve responses. All interactions occur within a HIPAA-compliant environment protected by encryption and strict access controls. With user permission, the assistant accesses health information via the nationwide Health Information Exchange system.
Prime members in the U.S. receive up to five free direct-message care consultations for over 30 common conditions through One Medical providers. Non-Prime members can connect with providers through Amazon’s pay-per-visit option. Users can sign up on the Amazon Health page and will be notified by email when access is granted.
To use the service, users must create or sign in to their personal Amazon Health profile and submit questions through the website or app. Amazon stated that Health AI can offer tailored guidance and take actions such as connecting users to treatments and professionals. The company did not share specific encryption methods or access controls and has not responded to requests for details.
TechCrunch reported that researchers warn companies may pull user conversations for training and that risks exist when sharing health information with AI. In January, OpenAI released ChatGPT Health, and Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare. Amazon’s expansion follows broader industry movement into healthcare-focused AI products.
Amazon acquired One Medical in 2023 for $3.9 billion. Health AI is available on Amazon.com and in the Amazon app. The assistant’s features are part of Amazon’s broader health services portfolio.
