WhatsApp introduces passkeys for end-to-end encrypted chat backups

DATE POSTED:October 30, 2025
WhatsApp introduces passkeys for end-to-end encrypted chat backups

WhatsApp introduces passkey support for end-to-end encrypted backups, enabling biometric or device screen lock access for lost devices. Previously lacking an encryption layer for chat backups, WhatsApp integrated end-to-end encryption in 2021, utilizing either passwords or 64-character encryption keys.

The previous methods necessitated users to recall backup passwords or possess encryption keys for restoration. Passkeys eliminate this requirement.

WhatsApp, which reported over 3 billion active users in May, will implement this feature to users over the coming weeks and months. Users can enable encrypted backups and check for the passkey option via Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
