Earlier on we spoke about how games are weird as we covered a new Korean interactive rom-com for the consoles. Every now and then however a game has a true power to affect you.
This War of Mine is one such game that really bothered me when I played it, somewhat unbelievably, almost a decade ago.
The premise of war, but seen through the eyes of the innocent civilians and their struggle to eke out an existence as the bombs fall around them was stark, horrifying, and captivating. Lauded by charities such as Amnesty International, This War of Mine was not a game you popped on to chill out with. It was a game you almost dreaded to play, it was unique in that respect.
We have had several DLCs over the course of the last decade but nobody was expecting the ‘Forget Celebrations’ DLC that devs 11-bit Studios just announced to mark the game’s anniversary.
In a post on Steam, they said, “Today marks the 10th anniversary of This War of Mine. A decade since its release, the game’s mission to shed light on the civilian cost of war is far from over.
That’s why, very soon, the game will receive a new charity DLC, Forget Celebrations. In this new story, you’ll return to war-torn Pogoren to follow the story of Katia, a seasoned war correspondent. While struggling to write a book on the brutal realities of war, a missile attack devastates her home, forcing her into an even harsher fight for survival and the recovery of her gathered material.
All studio proceeds from #ForgetCelebrations will be donated to support our charity partners in this anniversary initiative: War Child, Amnesty International, Liberty Ukraine, and Indie Games Poland. Stay tuned to learn how you can make a difference.”
With the numerous conflicts going on around the globe right now, this will be a tough experience to take. It is however an essential piece of PC gaming history and if you have never played the survival game, now is as good a time as any to help dose up on empathy to those currently facing their horrific plights.
It seems as though happy endings are as far away as ever
Forget Celebrations for This War of Mine is listed as coming soon.
