South Carolina may finally welcome its first casino

DATE POSTED:March 21, 2025
South Carolina

South Carolina could be on the verge of a major shift in its gaming landscape, as a new bill aims to introduce the state’s first-ever casino. The proposed legislation seeks to establish the South Carolina Gaming Commission, a regulatory body that would oversee the approval of casino licenses in designated rural and economically struggling areas along the I-95 corridor.

While the bill acknowledges that casino gambling may not be suitable for every community in the state, it underscores the potential economic benefits the industry could bring to targeted regions. By allowing casino development in these areas, lawmakers hope to drive job creation, boost tourism, and generate new revenue streams for local governments.

One of the most prominent proposals under this bill is the transformation of the abandoned Santee Mall Outlet in Orangeburg County into South Carolina’s first casino. The Santee Development Corporation has put forward this location as a prime candidate for the state’s gaming expansion, citing its accessibility and potential for revitalization. If approved, this project could serve as a model for future casino developments in South Carolina.

The proposed legislation could significantly reshape the state’s economy by tapping into the lucrative gaming industry. Casino resorts have proven to be economic powerhouses in other parts of the country, attracting visitors, creating employment opportunities, and contributing substantial tax revenues.

Supporters argue that introducing regulated casino gambling could provide a much-needed financial boost to struggling communities, while opponents remain concerned about the social impact of expanded gaming. The bill’s progress will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and South Carolina residents alike, as the state debates whether to roll the dice on casino gaming for the first time in its history.
