Setapp Mobile to cease operations in EU by February 16

DATE POSTED:January 21, 2026
Setapp Mobile to cease operations in EU by February 16

Setapp Mobile, an alternative app store launched in September 2024 by Ukrainian developer MacPaw, has announced its cessation of operations by February 16, 2026, citing evolving and complex commercial conditions in the European Union. Users accessed dozens of applications across productivity, finance, video, photo, and creativity categories through a $9.99 monthly subscription, contingent on their Apple ID being associated with an EU member state.

MacPaw’s decision stems from what it described as “still-evolving and complex business terms that don’t fit Setapp’s current business model,” according to a statement shared with TechCrunch. These “complex business terms” reference Apple’s fee structure for apps operating under new business terms in the EU, which include a Core Technology Fee of €0.50 charged for each first annual install exceeding 1 million within the past 12 months. Apple revised its fee structure last year to address Digital Markets Act (DMA) compliance, introducing complexity rather than simplification.

The company confirmed that all applications will be removed from Setapp Mobile by the sunset date, though applications available on Setapp Desktop will remain unaffected. Setapp stated its business model was not “viable” as commercial conditions continued to change. The news, initially reported by MacRumors, appeared on Setapp’s support site.

Setapp Mobile previously aimed to provide EU iOS users access to alternative app marketplaces, fostering a new app ecosystem for developers and users. Other alternative app stores, such as the Epic Games Store and AltStore, continue to operate in the EU.
