Samsung is reportedly working on creating its first tri-folding phone and a patent for a new potential device has now been seen online.

As reported and found by 91Mobiles, the patent does resemble a tri-folding flip-style device and the publisher noted it had been granted the patent on February 25 by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

In the finding, there is an international registration number along with an image which shows different perspectives of the display device.

When going off the patent document, the image provided suggests the potential new phone can be folded twice with two separate hinges shown.

The images also show a button at the top of the device, along with space for the type-C at the bottom of the phone. There are no details on potential sizes, but the images show a design that is slim with a large screen offering.

Samsung already rumored to be working on a tri-folding phone

There have been rumors about the company working on a new tri-folding smartphone for some time now which is reported to be called the Galaxy G Fold. This is expected to feature a folding design and some reports suggest it could be brought out as soon as mid-July of this year.

There are rumors it could include a 9.96-inch display screen which would be larger than what the company has previously brought out with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 (7.6 inches).

Another report suggests that when the smartphone does get released, it may have limited availability to first gauge consumer interest.

As for the patent, it’s unclear whether the company plans to launch a device with this design in the future.

What is clear, however, is that a number of brands are vying for the number one spot in the foldable phone market. In September, Huawei announced its $2,800 triple-foldable Mate XT Ultimate Design which features a 10.2-inch display and 50mP main camera. This was the world’s first triple-folding phone.

Since then, the Chinese electronics manufacturer Oppo has shared news of the upcoming Oppo Find N5 smartphone which has been dubbed the world’s thinnest book-style folding phone.
