Is PlayStation Network down? It certainly is and we don’t know much about why
Sony’s PlayStation Network is suffering an ongoing major outage with no indicator at this stage as to when normal service will be resumed. At the time of writing it is around eight hours since any news emerged from Sony, and that was a singular post on X that simply read, “We are aware some users might be currently experiencing issues with PSN. For more details: https://status.playstation.com.”
Update: We have now passed the nine-hour mark without further comment from Sony or PlayStation which seems a little bit crazy.

Following the link as per advice takes you to the service page that indicates that all PSN services are currently experiencing issues, but again, we don’t get any timeline for a fix. The length of time the service has been hit though suggests it is not simply a case of turning it off and back on again.
A further look at website service tracking site DownDectector highlights exactly when the issue began, and also, again at the time of writing, shows an upward trend of people reporting issues to the service.
It does suggest that the UK is suffering from the issue more than the USA as it correlates with players logging back on this morning to see if the issues have been fixed. Reports on Twitter also suggest this is the case currently. There are reports about issues from all around the globe however as gamers attempt to log in to take advantage of the heavily promoted free Call of Duty 6 weekend which allows players who don’t own the game to jump in and play.

As usual, the calls for compensation are already starting to be voiced as yet another service people pay for suffers downtime:
“Are we going to get some kind of reimbursement or credit for all the hours that we can’t use the service we pay for and for being loyal PlayStation customers ?”
People meanwhile are rightly getting annoyed about the lack of a further update from the PlayStation team with one comment saying, “Unacceptable lack of communication. We pay for your services. Many people make plans to play together on the weekend. You have allowed a disruption in services we pay for and plan for, without communication with us about what is happening. Reimbursement would be the thing to do.
The single post from the Ask PlayStation account has so far garnered some 17,000 comments.
We will update this page if there is any further announcement from Sony around the expected return time, or reasons the service has been down for so long.
