Playlist migration arrives on Spotify months after Apple’s debut
Spotify has integrated TuneMyMusic into its mobile app to enable users to import playlists from other streaming services, aiming to attract those switching platforms. This rollout follows Apple’s similar August launch amid controversies surrounding Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s business practices and artist departures.
Apple Music introduced its playlist import tool in August, allowing users to bring over collections from competing services. At that time, public scrutiny intensified over Daniel Ek’s alleged war-profiteering ties, prompting several artists to leave the platform. Although no direct connection exists between these events, the timing aligned with Spotify’s strategy to capitalize on potential user shifts by offering its own transfer option.
Spotify’s new feature relies on a partnership with TuneMyMusic rather than developing proprietary technology. TuneMyMusic facilitates the movement of playlists across various platforms, including Tidal, YouTube Music, Qobuz, Beatport, and Napster. Users can access this functionality directly within the Spotify app, streamlining the process without needing external websites.
Several third-party services provide comparable playlist transfer capabilities. Soundiiz offers multi-service compatibility, while SongShift specifically powers Apple Music’s import mechanism. These alternatives enable cross-platform migrations but impose restrictions on free accounts, such as caps on the number of playlists or their total length.
In contrast, Spotify’s integration delivers a premium-level experience with unlimited transfers, though limited to importing into Spotify only. This one-directional approach mirrors Apple Music’s setup. The feature is now deploying worldwide through the Spotify mobile application, making it accessible to users on iOS and Android devices globally.
