OpenAI acquires Convogo team to boost AI cloud efforts
OpenAI is acquiring the team behind Convogo, a platform that automates leadership assessments and feedback reporting for executive coaches, consultants, talent leaders, and HR teams. The deal hires the founders for AI cloud efforts without purchasing intellectual property or technology, in an all-stock transaction.
Convogo originated from a weekend hackathon project initiated by Matt Cooper’s mother, an executive coach. She inquired whether artificial intelligence could handle the repetitive task of writing reports, allowing her to dedicate more time to direct coaching interactions. This personal motivation drove the development of the tool, which addresses specific administrative burdens in professional coaching.
Over the past two years, Convogo has assisted thousands of coaches. The platform established partnerships with leading global leadership-development firms. These achievements reflect the tool’s adoption within the professional development sector, where it streamlined workflows for assessment and reporting processes.
In an email announcing the acquisition, Convogo’s founders—Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike Gillett—described insights gained from their operations. They identified a core challenge: translating advancements from new AI model releases into practical applications. The email stated verbatim, “We’re convinced now more than ever that the key to bridging that gap lies in thoughtful, purpose-built experiences, like what we’ve built for coaches at Convogo.”
The founders expressed enthusiasm for the transition. The email continued, “That’s why we’re thrilled to join OpenAI to continue our work of making AI accessible and useful to professionals in every industry.” This move aligns their expertise with broader AI infrastructure initiatives at OpenAI.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the acquisition targets the team specifically, directing their efforts toward AI cloud projects. A source familiar with the matter specified the all-stock nature of the deal. Consequently, Convogo’s product will cease operations as the founders integrate into OpenAI.
This transaction represents OpenAI’s ninth acquisition within one year, according to PitchBook data. Previous deals followed consistent patterns. In some instances, acquired products integrated into OpenAI’s offerings, such as Sky, an AI interface designed for Mac computers, and Statsig, a firm specializing in product testing.
In other cases, products discontinued entirely upon team integration. Examples include Roi, Context.ai, and Crossing Minds. These outcomes demonstrate OpenAI’s approach to absorbing specialized talent.
One deviation from this pattern occurred with the acquisition of Jonny Ive’s io Products. That entity maintains its product development trajectory. OpenAI and io Products collaborate on hardware incorporating AI capabilities.
