New measures in place to improve Diablo III and Diablo IV season launches

DATE POSTED:February 3, 2025
Season 34 of Diablo III.

Blizzard appears to be making a concerted effort to improve the quality of Diablo III and Diablo IV season releases. In line with this commitment, they recently announced that going forward there would be no overlap of Diablo III and Diablo IV season releases. However, this announcement came with very short notice and delayed the opening weekend of Diablo III Season 34 to prioritise Diablo IV’s Season of Witchcraft (Season 7). This change seems to be a part of a larger effort by Blizzard to release more polished seasons with fewer bugs, though time will only tell whether this becomes the case. The Season of Witchcraft has been pretty smooth sailing, with only a few notable bugs mentioned by the community.

Adam Fletcher, the Global Director of Community for Diablo, wrote in an X post that they didn’t want to overlap seasons any longer so that players could enjoy the opening weekends of Diablo III and Diablo IV without missing out on either. Fletcher also crucially explains that there are “extensive efforts to improve the quality of [their] releases”, with the Diablo III/IV season changes being one way of addressing these issues.

Yes. There is some extensive efforts to improve the quality of our releases. Will take some process changes/changes to a lot of things overall to help on this so it may be a bit before that is reflected but it is a huge thing we are focusing on.

Despite these commitments to ensuring higher quality releases, there was a whole slew of scheduling errors with Diablo III in particular, with Season 33 ending early then being brought back up, then Season 34’s initial release date of the 24th of January was delayed to the 31st of January with only 24 hours notice – much to the dismay of Diablo III fans who had already planned out their action-packed weekend. Whilst the Diablo III community was angry to have their weekend plans ruined, this change will be good in the long-term for scheduling seasons across Diablo III and Diablo IV.

A table describing all the things coming in Diablo Season of Witchcraft.

  • Diablo III Season 34 started on January 31 2025 and will continue for the typical three month period, though there’s no confirmed end date just yet.
  • Diablo IV Season 7 commenced on January 24 2025 and will end on April 15, 2025.
