The X profile of McAfee — a now-defunct man popular in the early days of crypto — came back to life with an artificial intelligence (AI) token project.
In his Jan. 23 X post, McAfee said that he was back and advised readers to “not fall for scam tokens.” He wrote:
“I’m back with AIntivirus. An AI version of myself. You didn’t think I would miss this cycle did you? […]Do not fall for scam tokens. This is the only official AIntivirus.”
The initial reaction by X users was one of disbelief. Crypto cybersecurity firm PeckShieldAlert has gone as far as to warn its users that the profile was compromised — only to later confirm that the account’s use was legitimate:
“Correction: The account has not been compromised.”
McAfee’s X profile bio currently reads like a memorial. It hints at an ongoing project meant to enshrine his memory:
“John was a wealth of wisdom & it would be a travesty to let his words die with him. His account is being maintained to keep his message of freedom alive.”
The detailsAIntivirus — presumably a dig at the antivirus software that carried his name which McAfee despised — also published a Medium post shedding more light on the nature of the project. The project hopes to “expand the legend and legacy of John McAfee.” The project promises to be far more than just an AI-powered memecoin:
“John was a rebel, a renegade, and we want to keep that attitude with this project. […] AIntivirus is not just another meme token. AItivirus is the cure for other meme coins. AItivirus will be releasing a suite of privacy products this year, with ALL products accepting AINTI as payment.”
The project’s first product will be a private eSIM and gift card exchange, with the launch expected to come in early February followed by an encrypted email service in March. The post explains that anonymity is the focus:
“You will be able to exchange Anti for eSIM cards in any country, gift cards from over 200 retailers including Airbnb, Amazon, Apple, DoorDash, Uber Eats, Walmart, and many many more. But the best thing….There will be NO KYC, and no personal information collected, not even an email. All interaction will happen on screen.”
