Japan’s MicroStrategy MetaPlanet acquires 68 BTC worth $6.6M

MetaPlanet, Japan’s first and only publicly listed Bitcoin Treasury Company, just acquired another 68 Bitcoin (BTC).

According to a recent announcement, MetaPlanet acquired the additional Bitcoin at an average price of $96,335 per BTC. With this latest acquisition, the firm’s balance sheet now includes 2,100 BTC worth over $200 million — equivalent to about 0.01% of the total Bitcoin supply.

MetaPlanet is largely following in the footsteps of Strategy. Strategy — until recently known as MicroStrategy — is a publicly traded business intelligence company founded in 1989. In 2020, it pivoted to acquire as much Bitcoin as possible. The company now holds well over 1% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist and is well underway in its pursuit of 2%.

Similarly, MetaPlanet is a Tokyo-listed investment firm focused on accumulating as much Bitcoin as possible. Back in late November 2024, the company announced the issuance of 1.75 billion yen ($11.3 million) of one-year ordinary bonds to buy more Bitcoin.

At the end of January, the MetaPlanet announced its ’21 Million Plan,’ which would make it Asia’s largest-ever equity capital raise for Bitcoin with a target of 16.65 billion yen. The firm’s representative director Simon Gerovich said at the time:

“Since adopting the Bitcoin Standard on April 8, 2024, Metaplanet has experienced exponential growth. […] The market has recognized Metaplanet as Tokyo’s preeminent Bitcoin company, and we are seizing this momentum to solidify our position as a global leader. […] Our vision is to lead the Bitcoin renaissance in Japan and emerge as one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holders globally. This plan is our commitment to that future.”

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at nearly $97,250 after seeing its value increase by nearly 1% over the last 24 hours. The world’s first cryptocurrency also gained over 1.4% over the last seven days.

Metaplanet stock is faring better, with nearly 2.8% gained over the last trading day and 3.45% over the last five. The stock value also gained nearly 27.5% over the last month.
