Google eliminates DEI hiring as it follows Trump

DATE POSTED:February 7, 2025

Following the trend of other companies, Google is scrapping its diversity initiatives following President Trump’s orders. Despite not being a government arm, the search giant will cull its aims to hire staff from non-typical backgrounds.

Part of the company’s plans could also stop it from publishing diversity reports. It has also begun to overhaul itself internally, with a released statement saying:

“We’re committed to creating a workplace where all our employees can succeed and have equal opportunities, and over the last year we’ve been reviewing our programmes designed to help us get there.”

This ties in with the fact that Google will want to remain on the “good side” of the Trump administration. While a vast majority of its business is within its search engine, Google relies on federal contracts too. In the statement, it directly references this:

“We’ve updated our 10-k language to reflect this, and as a federal contractor, our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic.”

The CEO, Sundar Pichai, attended the inauguration after Google donated $1 million to Trump’s fund.

Google alters attitude to employees once again

Google has been at the center of multiple controversies surrounding its attitude to employees. It recently introduced a new method of laying people off, offering to buy them out.

During the 2024 Gaza-Israel blitz, Google employees staged a sit-in protest over contracts with Israel. These people were fired and it even fired those simply interacting with them.

Other companies, like Meta, have also crushed their DEI programs. In one instance, Meta employees have begun to push back against it. Male bathrooms had tampons removed, which were explicitly placed to support transgender employees. These have now been placed back in some cases.

Trump’s call to end DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) was one of the first things he said at the inauguration in January. The 47th president has curbed DEI programs within the federal government, which has already gone awry.

In the days after the order, several federal employees have been placed on leave or removed from their positions. This is simply due to who they are or what they previously worked on. Some have spoken out online stating they feel “targeted”.
