Evolution has stepped things up in its patent infringement lawsuit against Light & Wonder. This time, they’re zeroing in on the company’s new game, “88 Fortunes Blaze Live Roulette.”
According to court documents filed on Thursday (Apr. 10), the game studio updated its complaint in Nevada District Court. They claim that Light & Wonder’s Roulette X is infringing on Evolution’s patents. The lawsuit also mentions that the two companies started out as partners, working together to bring Lightning Roulette to physical casinos. But apparently, things fell apart before Light & Wonder ended up launching Roulette X on their own.
In February, Nevada District Court Judge Cristina Silva tossed out the lawsuit, saying she felt the patents tied to the Lightning Roulette game were too vague to hold up and that they didn’t pass what’s known as the Alice test.
Evolution launches new lawsuit against Light & Wonder including roulette gameThis new motion comes after Evolution, the live casino giant, picked up Uplay1 in July 2024. With that deal, they also got their hands on the “Merati patents,” which cover systems and methods for hybrid gaming servers.
This all comes not long after Light & Wonder announced earlier this year that it plans to wind down and sell off its live casino business, following a strategic review.
It appears that Evolution is going after Light & Wonder’s roulette game after it got some spotlight at the 2024 Global Gaming Expo and officially launched this past January.
Cited by Next.io, the Swedish company’s legal representatives argued that Light & Wonder’s 88 Fortunes Blaze Live Roulette is “yet another copycat of Evolution’s Lightning Roulette.”
They added: “88 Fortunes Blaze Live is a live casino game provided to players using a hybrid gaming platform. The game is broadcast from a studio and provided to players using a server.”
According to the court filing, Evolution only found out about the game after Light & Wonder started posting about it publicly following its January 2025 launch.
