Could gambling be offered inflight on Delta? Survey gets poor response

A photograph capturing a close-up view of the interior of an airplane cabin during nighttime. Several passengers are asleep in their reclining seats, illuminated by the soft glow of overhead reading lights. A middle-aged man with graying hair is resting his head against the window, while a young woman with headphones around her neck is curled up with a blanket draped over her. The cabin is dimly lit, with a sense of quiet tranquility as passengers dream amidst the subtle hum of the aircraft.

There’s no denying that air travel can be incredibly boring, but a new Delta survey has shaken up ideas of in-flight entertainment as onboard gambling has been touted as a future possibility.

According to a Reddit post, by the user ‘lemonsqueezy19,’ a survey looking at different ‘offers’ has been sent out.

Interesting question asked in Delta Survey – Do you want exclusive access to sports gambling on your personal device while on Delta WiFi?

A question on the survey reads: “Which of the following offers would you like to trial or explore on your personal device through Delta’s Wi-Fi portal?” Alongside the typical ‘free access to movies and TV series,’ there’s also the more controversial option of ‘exclusive access to sports gambling (sportsbook) opportunities.’

It’s not known where the survey has come from, nor has it been verified, but the Delta CEO Ed Bastian had spoken about a partnership with DraftKings back in January.

At an event in Las Vegas, Bastian said, “From fantasy sports to online adventures, gaming has become a regular part of the daily lives of millions of our customers. And you shouldn’t have to hit pause just because you’re in the sky.”

At the time though, the specific details of the deal hadn’t yet been finalized. In a press release, the collaboration was described as being ‘potential’ as the company was ‘exploring’ the opportunities.

Public responds to Delta inflight gambling survey

The original poster of the survey screenshot followed it up by declaring it “an absolutely terrible idea.”

Many of the other commenters were of the same opinion, with one simply stating: “I would pay money not to have access to sports gambling on my phone.”

Another said: “Lose $2,000 in flight? After a few jack & coke? Increase in <> for sure. I don’t want to be diverted because the Lakers lost and someone’s mortgage payment was riding on it. Who thinks of these ideas?”

The legality of sports betting while going over different states has also been brought up: “This sports betting s*** is getting out of hand. It’s bad enough I have to watch Kevin Hart dance every commercial break of the NBA finals, but the last thing I want is to make bad parlays and future bets on a redeye 30000 in the air, half drunk and half asleep.

“Not to mention, what’s the legality? My state of WA only has sports betting legal on indigenous casinos.”
