The technology giant Baidu is set to unveil a pair of smart glasses with a built-in AI assistant at its annual Baidu World event in Shanghai this week, it has been reported.

Bloomberg reports a person familiar with the Chinese company’s schedule suggests the product will soon be shared, with the gadget having “built-in cameras to capture photos and video and will support voice interactions built atop Baidu’s Ernie foundation model.”

If the product is confirmed during the event, the company could provide major competition to Meta’s Ray-Bans. These glasses feature several AI features as well as the ability to capture photos and video through the integrated HD camera.

The Meta Ray-Ban’s have proven to be a big hit around the globe. They are the best-selling product in the majority of Ray-Ban stores in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The source in Bloomberg’s report said sales of the product could begin as soon as early 2025 and the product will likely cost less than Meta’s which is priced at $299.

The smart glasses are said to be able to connect to a suite of products like Baidu Maps and its online encyclopedia, Baike.

The glasses have not been confirmed by the brand, nor has any information been released about the potential launch.

Baidu reported to be entering AI smart glasses market, amongst others

The sector is hotting up as other reports have come in too, including a suggestion that Apple is heading in the AI smart glasses direction.

A new initiative, named ‘Project Atlas,’ has been reported as having launched and gotten underway, with the internal study being led by Apple’s Product Systems Quality team which is part of the hardware engineering division.

As for the Baidu rumors, these could soon be known as the Baidu World event begins on November 12 and will be streamed live from Shanghai.

The company has said this will include CEO Robin Li’s annual speech on the latest AI breakthroughs and more.
