Amazon has introduced three new personality styles for its Alexa+ artificial intelligence assistant, allowing users to customize its communication approach. These styles—Brief, Chill, and Sweet—are available now to all Alexa+ customers. Users can select them through the Alexa app or by using the voice command “Alexa, change your personality style.” Both methods also permit a reversion to the classic Alexa voice. The update aims to provide varied interaction modes tailored to different user preferences.
The Brief personality style eliminates conversational filler. It provides direct responses without small talk or extraneous dialogue. In contrast, the Chill style adopts an easygoing attitude inspired by caricatures of the surfer or stoner archetype. The Sweet style is characterized as aggressively perky and chipper. Amazon released audio samples demonstrating these styles in response to the query “Alexa, how’s it going?” The Chill voice responded, “Life’s treating me well – all systems are Zen and the digital universe is spinning in harmony.” The Sweet voice replied, “Absolutely fantastic! I’m radiating pure joy and ready to make your day incredibly amazing!”
Amazon developed these personalities using five specific metrics: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. These metrics serve as sliding scales to define the assistant’s behavior. The company indicated that it may release additional personality options in the future. These future options would utilize different combinations of the five established traits. This structured approach allows for systematic customization of the assistant’s interaction style.
