Aldi is enhancing customer convenience by collaborating with National Lottery operator Allwyn to introduce The National Lottery at all self-checkouts across its UK stores.

While National Lottery draw games have been available for purchase through Aldi staff since 2021, this latest development will allow shoppers to buy tickets independently at self-checkout stations for the first time.

As the UK’s fourth-largest supermarket, Aldi is surprisingly among the first retailers to launch this service, with the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda still requiring you to use either the regular checkouts or a specific section in the store to purchase tickets.

The rollout is already in progress across more than 1,050 stores nationwide and full implementation is expected to be completed by spring 2025, offering shoppers an even more seamless way to purchase their National Lottery tickets while buying their groceries.

Customers using self-checkouts will have access to Lucky Dip tickets for Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball, and Set For Life games. Additionally, those with a National Lottery Fast Pay card can conveniently self-scan to generate their bespoke tickets, making the whole process extremely streamlined.

To ensure responsible gaming, an age verification check will be conducted by an Aldi colleague before shoppers can complete their lottery ticket purchases akin to that of if you were attempting to purchase alcohol or any other age-restricted item.

With this new initiative, Aldi continues to prioritize both convenience and compliance, making it easier than ever for customers to participate in The National Lottery while shopping.

Richard Thornton, Communications Director at Aldi, emphasized the supermarket’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience: “We’re always looking for ways to improve the shopping experience for our customers, which is why we’ve made it even easier to enter The National Lottery while picking up essentials at our self-checkouts.”

He also goes on to say that Aldi shoppers “know they’ll always find amazing value at Aldi, but we hope some lucky customers manage to find the winning numbers at our self-checkouts too.”

Jenny Blogg, Operations Director at Allwyn, highlighted the significance of this expansion as part of the National Lottery’s ongoing transformation: “As we continue on our retail transformation journey – adapting our offering for a changing retail landscape and new-look stores – we’re delighted to be expanding our partnership with Aldi.”

Furthering this, Blogg went on to state that this initiative will “reach even more players” and the project has “been a massive effort by the teams at both Allwyn and Aldi”.
