Adobe expands Photoshop with new iPhone app and web versionTraditionally, Photoshop has been primarily available on desktop platforms. This announcement marks an expansion to mobile, beginning with an iPhone app and a web-based version, following an initial debut on the iPad in 2019.
The web app will be available without the need for a download, offering a simplified user experience as part of the new “Photoshop Mobile & Web plan.” This plan allows users to sync projects between the iPhone and web app, and includes enhanced features like layer effects, “Quick Actions,” and generative AI capabilities. The free version of the app on iPhone supports various edits and can save files in PSD format.
Adobe has stated that the following features are available for free:
The “Photoshop Mobile & Web plan” is available for purchase separately but is included in all Creative Cloud memberships that provide access to Photoshop.
The Photoshop app for iPhone can now be downloaded via the App Store, while the Android version will be released as a beta for users who sign up to learn more.
Adobe emphasized the significance of this expansion, stating that for over three decades, Photoshop has empowered millions of creators to express their imagination. The company acknowledged the demand from mobile-first creators who wish to utilize Photoshop’s iconic tools on the go.
The new Photoshop for iPhone offers a reimagined interface optimized for mobile devices, allowing users to add, remove, adjust, and combine content while accessing a wide range of free Adobe Stock assets without losing precision or resolution.
Photoshop on the phone is not intended to replace the desktop version, which offers deeper and more powerful editing tools. Instead, it caters to mobile-first creators and those who might be new to Photoshop. This launch also introduces a new Photoshop Mobile & Web plan available via the App Store, offering access to premium features on mobile and web. Both applications are designed to provide similar user experiences, with files syncing automatically across devices.
The web app features significant updates, including an improved user interface for intuitive editing, direct integration with the Adobe Stock library, and broader availability across browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
For existing Photoshop desktop subscribers, the new iPhone app and web version are included with subscriptions, allowing users to access their work and make edits in various environments. The mobile app encompasses a range of free capabilities, enabling nuanced design and editing through core Photoshop tools, advanced object removal, and generative AI-assisted features.
For those desiring additional capabilities, Adobe is offering a premium tier that provides complete access to upgraded features on the web and enhanced mobile tools. This premium plan includes functionalities such as the Camera RAW filter, advanced selection tools, access to over 20,000 fonts, and much more.
Adobe Firefly powers the generative AI features, allowing users to seamlessly edit images and ideate new assets safely for commercial use. The new Photoshop Mobile & Web plan can be purchased through the App Store, and for current Photoshop desktop subscribers, access to the iPhone app is included with their subscription.
Adobe has also introduced Live Co-editing to Photoshop, which is currently available in beta, enabling real-time collaboration among multiple contributors across both desktop and web platforms.
